Street Art Stencil

So, I just had the most exciting time creating a stencil for my Design class. The assignment called for us to design an image (text may be used, I did not) then spray paint it onto a piece of white foam core (no actual wall tagging here – lol).  We had to have some sort of message to convey.  It could be religious, political, satire, humorous, etc, just as long as it meant something. After thinking long and hard, I got inspired by the Gospel of Matthew and the Sermon on the Mount. In chapter 5, verse 3, Jesus says “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.”  This beatitude spoke to me at this time in my life and I felt the need to illustrate it. I chose a homeless man, sleeping against a wall. Around this poor soul, wraps an angel’s wing, enveloping and cradling him. I really love the way this has turned out and I hope you enjoy. Maybe someday, I’ll be able to make it life size. I’ve attached the progression of the work.
